Now, let’s dive into the two-day itinerary that will turn your road trip into a memorable kiwi adventure.

Day 1: Wellington to Awastone in Mangaweka

  • Morning:
Start your trip early from Wellington and pause in Palmerston North at the award-winning Joseph Street Kitchen, a cozy café who's motto is "Just good food, good service, good coffee."

  • Optional Stop:
Make a stop in Friendly Feilding, known for its vibrant farmers' market (on Fridays) and quaint streets.

  • Afternoon Adventure:
Head to Mangaweka and check in at Awastone. Experience the iconic Rangitīkei River on either the Papa Gorge Family Rafting or the Boulders Scenic Float—perfect for soaking in the breathtaking papa cliffs and beautiful waters. (Note: the Boulders is a half-day float starting at 10am so this could be a better option for day two or stretch out your itinerary to three days)

Day 2: Awastone to Taupō via National Park

  • Morning:
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at Awastone before heading north. Stop at Ohakune, the carrot capital, for a photo-op and a stroll.
  • Lunch Stop:
Enjoy lunch at Schnapps Bar in National Park, which offers hearty meals in a cool, quirky atmosphere. Take a longer stop here and enjoy their 18-hole mini golf course before jumping back on the road to Taupō!

  • Afternoon:
There's plenty of beautiful spots to stop along the way in between National Park and Taupō, take your time and enjoy the beautiful drive. Once you arrive in Taupō, spend your time relaxing by the lake, visit Huka Falls and Aratiatia Rapids and enjoy one of Taupōs many eateries.

This scenic detour offers more than just a way around the Desert Road closure; it’s an invitation to explore the often overlooked treasures of New Zealand’s North Island.

We've saved a handy list of all of these things to do (and more!) on google maps here.
