Starting at Awastone

Awastone is a unique holiday destination located in the small town of Mangaweka, around an hour's drive from Palmerston North.  Set in a stunning natural setting, overlooking the Mangaweka River, Awastone is the perfect place to start your cycling adventure.

From Awastone, you can join the cycleway and head north towards Palmerston North. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, with a mixture of off-road paths, quiet country roads, and shared paths.

The Pohangina Valley

As you head north from Awastone, you will soon reach the beautiful Pohangina Valley. This section of the cycleway is one of the most scenic, taking riders through picturesque farmland, rolling hills, and native bush.

Along the way, you can stop off at the historic Railway Reserve, where you can explore the restored railway station and enjoy a picnic in the beautiful gardens. You can also visit the Pohangina Valley Estate, a local winery that produces award-winning wines and offers tastings and cellar door sales.

The Manawatu River

As you continue north, the cycleway follows the banks of the Manawatu River, offering stunning views of the rugged gorge and the surrounding hills. This section of the trail is a little more challenging, with some steep climbs and descents, but the breathtaking views are well worth the effort.

Along the way, you can stop off at the Te Apiti Wind Farm, where you can learn about renewable energy and the technology behind wind turbines. You can also visit the popular Swing Bridge Cafe, which offers delicious food and drinks and stunning views of the river.
