Awastone

Let us welcome your tour group.
Cafe, LOTR tours and Whitecliffs Boulders
1/6

Awastone is located on the Rangitikei River at Mangaweka. Just 1km off State Highway One we have the most upstream location on the Rangitikei River easily accessed from Sate Highway One.

The Rangitikei River is famous for its deep gorges and unique geology, an example of which was used as a location in the Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Riverside base for River Tours

Awastone is the base for all Rangitikei River activities, including Lord of the Rings location experiences, Whitecliffs Boulders tour, Family Fun Rafting and Kayaking. Awastone features a beautiful café overlooking the river, campsites and cabin accommodation. While our full day LOTR and Boulders tours are favourites with ITO's, we also offer short and fun trips through the local gorge that will take about 1 hour on the water. A refreshing break on you journey and fantastic for families with young kids.

The Grand Canyons of the Rangitikei is a trip that we have been operating for 30 years however its popularity increased once it was used as a location for Lord of the Rings. This full day float trip is suitable for all levels of fitness and remains the only way to access these locations in a single day.

The Boulders are an eerie Boulder Garden set on the banks of the Rangitikei. These concretions sit in a small stand of native bush and provide the setting for our

Beautiful Riverside Cafe

Our Café is open from 8am to 8pm daily over the summer months and is ideally situated to cater to tour group bookings for lunches, afternoon teas or dinners, providing a pleasant respite from State Highway One with short walks and easy river access.

We can cater for groups of up to 80 people however we are ideally placed for small group tours. While we are open every day over the summer from 8am - 8pm, we prefer to have some advance notice if you were to bring a group in.

Shortwalks, swimming, fossil hunting - loads of free stuff to do!

While our river trips are a favourite for all ages and no level of fitness is required at all, they are not for everyone. A short stop at Awastone provides opportunities for your customers to explore the river basin in their own way. The Rangitikei River walk takes in some intriguing history with one of NZ's first Hydro schemes and of course crossing the spectacular cantilever bridge over the Rangitikei. During the hotter days of summer there is a safe swimming hole right in front of Awastone and the river bank is laden with fascinating  rocks displaying fossils.
