We arrived at the river, at about 900 metres alt. with it raining really hard and the rain falling as snow at about 1000m. Luckily the lads didn't realise the river was rising from the mornings weather or else it would have been a tad intimidating! While the lads were disappointed with their place, coach was far from disappointed with their performance. Some solid class four rafting, far more difficult than anyone had anticipated Reading and running that sort of water is quite advanced and the lads did it superbly. The other teams had a definite advantage here with having been down this section a few times prior so really stoked with how they went. As they were instructed to avoid the big holes, sometimes they were a bit conservative maybe but I am OK with that!

The afternoon was rest again ready for the event i think the lads were looking forward to the most... the after party. And it did not disappoint Definitely Class 5 and the lads were not quite so conservative with their lines! Enough said about that and I promised there would be no photos. Lets just say, while at some stage coach thought he had a smother on his hands and we did suffer a little bit of mismothering, the mob were back in the shed by 4am... now they might need to be drenched.

A couple of photos... the warm up on the lake and the "regatta" start. Super nervous for all of us, that time on the start line for the first time at a world championship event, at least i think it was, i know it was for the coach!

Our day of competition was over by ten past nine, we were back on the bank to support the U23 girls, then chilled for a couple hours at the river and came on home after the prizegiving.

Our afternoon of rest turned into a bit of a mission, the boys noticed someone standing on a rock high up above the Pueblo and decided we needed to get there. So we went for a wee hike to a rock looking out over the river valley. It was an awesome mission, followed it up with a massive meal (at about 10.30 in true espanol style) and then bed. Up this morning, another good looking day and ready for the head 2 head races. After those we are to check out the downriver section. After some fast talking from coach Nick and a bollocking for the girls they made their way back to the top to pull off a silver medal run. The Russians first run taking Gold.

The best viewing for most of us was on the big screen so quite a good atmosphere at West West, the base. The same footage is live on Facebook, look for the link below

A bunch of ex tully guides were hanging at the back of the prizegiving, 3 of us with kids in the comp. Me and my old mate Tresto had our daughters on the podium at the same time, nz and Nippon. Cool.

Master's and open turn at 10am Sunday.

Sunday

Well not a good day for us in the Masters Men tean at the slalom today. We blew a gate in our first run which cost us dearly and we had to put all our cards on the second run. And we had a great run... unfortunately the river level had changed throughout the day and the times from the first run remained the winning ones! So unfortunately no podium for us in the Slalom, 4th place for us. Japan took gold, well on line to take the championship, our old nemesis Czec boys silver and the Brazilians had a blinder to take Bronze.

A bit gutting, we had just watched our mate Sam Sutton take out the Sickline... again... and were psyched to have a sick line ourselves... nope.

Big Day Monday, all on the line now with the Downriver race, its going to be massive!

Monday

Yes it was a big day, and as usual a whirlwind of partying, ceremony and goodbyes for the 24 hours after the finish line.

We were beaten well and truly by the Japanese Masters team who once again posted the fastest time of the day... overall. Those boys were the fastest overall all week so pretty awesome team. The Czech boys have been trying to beat us and have been good competition since 2013, so well done to them too.

Anyway, mission complete, I won't divulge all of the sordid details of the nights festivities so I'll sign off here.

Coming Events and Trips

Paul and Kelsey are in Japan till the 16th of October for the World Rafting Championships.
